a. Phonological awareness is used to describe a range of skills that involve the understanding, use, and recall of sounds. Phonological awareness also in compasses a skill known as phonemic awareness, which is the ability to focus on and manipulate phonemes in spoken words. Phonological awareness is important for beginning reading success because it allows children to know that each letter of the alphabet represents a certain sound(s) and when they come across that letter while reading they will be able to pronounce it. Developing the skills of understanding is extremely important to the overall success of a student. Being able to simply read a passage or sentence, does not mean the student understood it. Being about to actually take understanding in the words that create these sentences, allows the student to be able to comprehend the passage. Comprehension is a big skill that all students need to know because it isn’t just used in school it is used also outside of school.
