In the world today, technology has become a part of almost all aspects of everyday life. Handheld technological devices are even being used by some people while they drive, putting the lives of everyone on the road in danger, including their own. As a result, some states are enforcing laws that make driving while using handheld phones illegal. Although some might say that this law is unnecessary and inconvenient, in reality states should enforce this law because using handheld phones while driving creates a distracting environment, causes a prodigious amount of accidents, and is unnecessary with the vast amount of hands free technology that is offered. Furthermore, handheld phone use while driving is the most dangerous when performed by inexperienced, young drivers. Cell phones are particularly distracting and engaging for young people; teenagers seem to use their phones every minute of every day. This truth becomes dangerous when teenagers are granted the right to drive on their own. New teenage drivers are already at a higher risk of causing accidents due to their lack of experience, but because of their extreme attraction to cell phones, the distractions become too bountiful to handle. Clearly, all drivers simply cannot safely multitask the fundamental duties of driving with handheld phone use. In addition, making handheld phone use while driving illegal would prevent a huge amount of accidents. In the United States, drinking while driving used to be the biggest cause of car accidents. Today, because technology is so abundant and people's dependency on their devices is higher than ever, handheld cell phone use while driving is now the leading cause of car accidents in America.
