Does language have a positive effect on phonemic awareness in several demographic groups?
If so, what patterns emerge from among the demographic groups when compared to each other.
Hypothesis:
Students with theoretical or assessed deficits in language will have a significantly lower score in phonemic awareness when compared with their counterparts.

The district being used for this study uses the online version of this assessment. That data goes into the student's assessment library. All students are given a word list and a spelling assessment. Those two scores are combined for a sum score. The sum score is used to determine if the student reaching benchmarks, or if further diagnostics need to be given to determine the cause of the student not reaching benchmark. For the purpose of this study, only the total spelling score will be used. The summed score will not be used because it is make up of the word list. The word list portion of this screener is a measure of word recall fluency and not phonemic skills. The instrument is administered one on one. The word appears on the computer screen for 2 to 3 seconds and the students are asked to recall the word. The student would not have time to decode the word using phonic …show more content…
If they have all the letter features they but confuse some of the letters they receive a 2-3 and if they spelled the whole word correctly they received 4 point for that word. Fall benchmarks for spelling along are 9 points for 16 words, grade 2; 20 points for 20 words, and Grade 3, 29 points for 24 words. Scores between grade levels are not comparable because their are a different amount of words required at each grade level.
