Phonemic Awareness And Phonic Weaknesses

The majority of my students lacked the foundational skills to be successful in the subject areas of Reading and Mathematics. Some of the common areas of weakness in reading that my students have demonstrated were in areas of phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. I noticed that phonemic awareness and phonics weaknesses frequently occurred in my first and second grade students. Those students had difficulty matching sounds and letters, which can affect their reading and spelling. They guessed at words based on the first letter or two. They did not correctly blend or put together sounds to make words. They also substitute phonemes when saying or writing words. They had a hard time telling how many syllables there …show more content…
They also could not locate the key facts from informational text. Some vocabulary weaknesses were that these students misused common grade level words in various texts. They also struggled find the accurate descriptive words while describing something when speaking as well as writing. Some fluency weaknesses were that these students read slowly with no expressions, stumbled and lost their place when reading aloud which caused frustration. Also, when reading, they did not pause at meaningful breaks within sentences. The common math weaknesses that my students showed in class were unable to recall basic math facts, procedures, and rules. They forget what they were doing in the middle of a math problem. They had difficulties sequencing multiple steps, understanding with the vocabulary of math which caused confusion that lead to having difficulty explaining and communicating about math, including asking and answering questions. They also lost their place while working on a math problem.
