Phoenix Jackson, a protagonist in “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty, embarks on a journey to town through the Natchez trail. Though there is no actual knowing of her people make an assumption about her age and her inabilities, in society we often like to discriminate against people before evaluating them. When old age comes to mind what do you think of: Crippled? Weak? Those are just some mere first impressions we make which shape our basic perception. Yes, Phoenix may embody some effects of old age. The things Phoenix Jackson overcomes are: her disabilities, lack of any help and without help uses experience to beat obstacles. Phoenix is the type of character that does anything to achieve greater things no matter what's in the way

When the young hunter approached her with a gun she had everything under control, "Well, Granny," he said, "you must be a hundred years old, and scared of nothing.” implying she has seen similar things before so it wasn't a big deal. Soon after the hunter went his separate ways Phoenix fled the scene to make sure she doesn't cross paths with him again. “Then they went in different directions, but she could hear the gun shooting again and again over the hill. She walked on.’’

Through Phoenix’s many years of slogging, she may have faced many challenges in going into town. Racism, discrimination and overall bad treatment. Though society perceives older people as incapable, Phoenix Jackson has surely proven it wrong and that anyone can accomplish their goal no matter what age, gender or race. She overcame things like disabilities, helplessness and sticky situations using the only force, her brain. Individuals like Pheonix aren't just “old people” but are people we can learn from to better ourselves. Just as how the famous quote goes, “Don’t judge a book by its
