Social Phobia When disclosed with the term psychological disorder, uneducated assumptions are often associated with one being lunatic or crazed. Daily experiences help shape the perspective of people, as well as influences their view of the world. Situations that we as humans come across play a role in how they react in certain scenarios as well. Some of these experiences may trigger social phobia, also referred to as social anxiety. The Social Anxiety Institute defines social anxiety as “the fear of interaction with people that brings on self consciousness, feelings of being negatively judged and evaluated.” Feelings of inferiority, embarrassment, humiliation and depression are commonly …show more content…
Tim Kenny states “You must have three features to be diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.” “Your symptoms must not be the result of some other mental health condition (for example, a delusion). You feel anxious entirely or mostly in social situations. One of your main symptoms will be the avoidance of social situations.” If you are experiencing any of the side effects stated above it is recommended to see your doctor, who should at that point issue a short questionnaire to gather extra information on how severely you may affected. Anxiety disorders affect nearly forty-million adults above the age eighteen in the United States, this is equivalent to approximately 18% of the U.S. population. Social Anxiety alone affects fifteen million of the forty. It equally effects men and women and is proven to begin around the age 13. Cognitive is founded on the idea that certain ways of thinking trigger mental issues such as anxiety, the therapist will evaluate you and help you understand your thought patterns. Behavioral therapy is aimed to help you change behaviors that are harmful to your self or have a negative affect on you. (Dr. Euan Lawson) Phobias have a negative affect on your mind triggered by fear, a therapist tries to help you understand and change your view on what is causing the fear. Like any disorder you may feel helpless, with social anxiety you may be able to help yourself. By self teaching yourself simple breathing techniques which reduce stress levels and anxiety. Another option is antidepressant medications, although these are most commonly used for depression they also work by altering neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which are said to be involved with the cause of anxiety disorders.
“Beliefs regarding friends’ experience with cannabis related problems may play an especially important role in the experience of cannabis related problems among social anxious users.” (Mental Health Weekly Digest, November 24, 2014) Louisiana State University had research the impact of social anxiety and the misconception of cannabis related problems. The university found that the cannabis users who are socially anxious are more vulnerable to impairment. They have found the underlying connection between
