Society views music education as the last place, silver medalist, in determining a student’s academic success. It is often undervalued and considered an elective part of an individual’s education; however, music education is one of the most involved forms of education offered in public school institutions. President Gerald Ford once said “Music education opens doors that help children pass from school into the world around them… The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music.” This idea of a complete education cannot exist without the presence of music in our school systems.

The role of music education is to ensure that students have a way to communicate and share their passions.
The role of a music educator is to look at the passion a student has and provide them with the knowledge to help the passion grow. Being a member of the band, orchestra, or chorus is an option. The majority of the students enrolled in these classes walk through the door with their fingers stretched wide, to catch as much knowledge as they possibly can. As a music educator, my role is to ensure these hands never get bruised or blistered. No students should ever be told that they do not have the musical skill required to be a successful musician. The stars illuminate the sky each night; no matter how many times the sun rises to make them seem invisible. I want my students to understand that they are shinning stars, regardless of how many times they want to hide away or want to feel invisible. I want them to understand that their successes far outweigh any mistakes they could ever make.
Students cannot reach their full capacity of success if they do not have support from not only their teachers, but also their families. It is the responsibility of the educator to establish a constant and consistent stream of communication with the parents of the student. Parents should receive updates on how their child is progressing in a program in order to ensure a child does not miss out on any opportunities. A larger form of this communication also needs to occur with the administration of the school. To ensure that all parties can view the success of the
