The following dialogue represents an interview that was conducted to understand a school administrator’s philosophy of leadership and how it applies to developing a vision for a school and/or district. By understanding an experienced and established school administrator’s philosophy, it will help aspiring administrators to form their own ideas and mindsets to facilitating the daily functioning of a school. Before ever developing a philosophy of leadership, one must understand the qualities of a leader. Leadership must be developed through many experiences of success and failure. A quality leader possesses the ability to motivate, communicate, collaborate, adapt, evolve, and problem solve. The role of a leader is constantly changing and by possessing these attributes, a leader can then confidently lead an institution to experience high levels of success.

Lane Hill, principal, Ed.S, to discuss his personal philosophy of leadership and how it applies to developing a vision for his school. Mr. Hill is a well-respected and accomplished administrator with 26 years in education and having spent 18 of those years as an assistant principal/principal. Throughout the interview Mr. Hill provided very thoughtful and useful insight to the role of a leader and the many ways that is changes from day to day.
