Many movement throughout the dancer's body and facial expressions are a dominant part of the dance. How the dancer personally feels is brought to life when he or she performs the dance. Similar to art, when a painter lifts a paint brush and begins to paint, the image is brought to life by the hand of the artist. All the expressions lie in the hands of the performer. Many people would agree, “Expressivity in dance, understood as a certain aesthetic property, is found in the human body” (The Philosophy of Dance 13). Dancers use specific body movements to express their emotions. Any form of art has a way of expressing how a person feels, “[E]mpathy is understood by the ability to feel what is understood as someone else’s experience, like when a dance performer informs the audience of appreciative responses.” (The Philosophy of Dance 15). Dance has a way of communicating with an individual that no other art form can. When a person appreciates dance, they can connect on levels that the dancer does as well. The audience begins to feel exactly what the dancer intended for them to feel. When a person is watching a dancer perform, they may feel many different emotions all the way through the entire dance. Ideas, feelings, thoughts, images, emotions-- all this is normal for a human being to feel when they are witnessing a dance. Observing a dance and discovering that it appeals to a person’s emotions makes an individual appreciate what he or she is watching. “A knowledge of the visual elements of art helps you to understand how artworks are created” (Art Appreciation 4). It is almost like reading a book. Communicating in a variety of ways, there can be many different approaches to understanding and appreciating a dance.
