The main idea of this quote is asking how can a person live without knowing their past? This quote plays a huge roll in the “Two Cultures” chapter in terms of faith and beliefs. It presents the idea of a person needing to understand their faith’s history to know what they are believing in. The quote also refers to the idea of for a person to consider themselves having lived, they need to know their past. If a person does not know their past, then they have only been on earth for a little amount of time. On the contrary, if a person knows their past, then perhaps they have been on earth for many years. This idea is shared in the book; “She would not be living on this planet for more than a few years. But if the history of mankind was her own history, in a way she was thousands of years old” (161).
