An old misconception referred to by Shilo is, “When people use to think of a midwife they would think of old and fat women that were trained by their grandma.” It is true that in the past there were many cases where someone would call themselves a midwife with absolutely no training, this is something being worked towards correcting. A Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) has passed an exam and focuses primarily on child birth. Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) have graduated a formal schooling and training and have been certified, they work with their patients in multiple aspects other than just child birth and can prescribe medicine. Shilo and Alice are both Certified Nurse Practitioners with seven years of schooling and a formal program. Many of which are overlooked due to the “bad rep” they have. You can choose what degree or type of midwife you want. That’s one of the glories about them, they are focused on giving women as many options as possible. The baby can be delivered in house or in the hospital, and hopefully soon in the birthing center. All of their focus is on their patient, paperwork is a must but they don’t bombard their patients during stressful times. After labor with a midwife you can go home four to six hours later. While they don’t personally practice medicine that doesn’t mean that they oppose it. Their main objective is to make their patients as comfortable as possible and if this means that they need to transfer them to be helped by an OB they will, because the patient comes first. Shilo and Alice try to help the community in every aspect, they put a lot of time and effort into their career and this is something more people should understand.
