My dialogue partner also believes that never attempting is worse than failing at something. They believe that one may not know what could happen. One can succeed at something even when all odds point to failure. When one does not attempt in the first place, they are missing out on possible discoveries. If you never take that leap of faith, how are you to know what lies below.

I asked “Has there been a time when it was worse to fail than having to try in the first place?” At first they laughed and said yes, realizing that they had just contradicted their previous statements. Then they said that although they had wished they had never tried in the first place, they are glad they did because now they know what not to do. By knowing what failed then, helps them not repeat the same mistake that will lead to failure. They saw their failure as valuable experience that lead to new unexpected
