In Philly College Team, she says, "I feel that I have mentors who take the time to truly talk to you one on one and care about you personally. I also appreciate that even though you are really supposed to go out and look for

I met Andrea Seaberg two years ago when she was a senior at Detroit Lakes High School. She had been placed to work with me (a second grade teacher) from her School-To-Work advisor after she had told her that she was interested in becoming a teacher someday. Andrea and I hit it off immediately. She had the same love and energy that I feel I have as an educator. Needless to say, when she asked me to be her mentor throughout her schooling at Bemidji State University, I was thrilled.…

Lancaster is a redshirt senior and a huge leader for this Wildcat team. This season he was voted by his teammates to wear #1, which represents “a man who embodies the values and character of the Northwestern football family” according to head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Lancaster is an athletic freak in the weight room but that has not translated to the field yet. Lancaster is consistently double teamed, but defensive linemen need to prove in college they can adopt and beat the double team and that is something Lancaster has not been able to prove yet. Lancaster also lacks the lateral quickness needed to be a successful lineman at the next level.…

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

Someone in my life that has impacted the way that I live through one of the four National Honor Society pillars would be my mother by displaying exceptional character. My mother, Esmeralda Alvarez, has always shown strong determination, and has had an open mind about all aspects of life. As a child, she grew up in Brownsville, Texas with very little money and was raised by a single mother trying to care for four kids. She dropped out of school at the age of 15 to work, attempting to assist her mother financially even if it meant never getting the chance to graduate high school.…

In a topic that is widely discussed on campus and seems like a no brainer to many has had a bunch of people working, wondering, and wishing. From 1897 to 1986 Wichita State University played competitive football at many different levels including the KCAC, CIAC, and our current conference of the Missouri Valley. Boasting a 375-402-47 record and 14 conference titles the Shockers were at best a sub-par team. Over history the Shocker football team endured some tough times and none were more wrenching than the plane crash in 1970. On October 2, half of the team was flying to a game in Logan, Utah against Utah State University from Denver, Colorado.…

Barb Thorson is an amazing mother, wife, follower of God, and she was an amazing dance coach. From the years I was in eighth to eleventh grade Barb was the head coach of the Saint Mary’s Saintiques. Barb mainly worked with the varsity team, but even when she was not explicitly coaching junior high or junior varsity, she was still extremely involved with both teams. I chose Barb as my version of an exemplary leader for numerous reasons. At practice Barb dedicated her full attention to the dancers; no matter what was going on in her outside life, when she was at practice, the girls came first.…

Every day when I come home from school, I am greeted at the door by two munchkins that are ordinarily covered in dirt and sporting sticky hands. These munchkins happen to be my sprightly little sisters, and although they look like munchkins, they are in fact, not. Even though they are still small human beings, they have the power to brighten my day in a matter of seconds with one little giggle. With them in mind, I expect that the most challenging aspect that I will face in college is going without their alacrity throughout my days. The light that they bring to my life is one that inspires me to try my best.…

Because I am a Coptic Orthodox Christian, my religion and culture have always been intertwined. However, I used to view my education as apart from them, as there was only one other Copt in my high school and there were none in my elementary or middle school. When I began this semester at NJIT, I realized that I had been missing something for the past thirteen years of my schooling. In just a matter of weeks, I found myself at home within the Coptic community here. I have recognized a few of its main purposes, all of which are evident in the modes and styles of communication: to develop a strong support network, to cultivate a sense of family, and to ease the transition for new students.…

I honestly can’t believe that it is already the end of my senior year, the end of my high school year, and the end of my PSP membership. After being part of the program for six years, six grueling years crawling towards the end goal of going to somewhere else to have a chance to better myself and my future, it is hard to imagine that my time with the blessed program would be coming to an end. This program changed me, no doubt about it, in ways that I see as positive and placed me in a state brighter than I was in when I was allowed the chance six years ago. When I entered the program, I was in a dark place. Though I was very young at the time, I was engrained with anger and hopelessness.…
