Phillis Wheatley was the first African american poet. Phillis had a very rough life she was taken from her parents when she was only a little girl around the age of 7 or 8. Many people are confused on how a slaves was able to become a poet being a slave. Slaves were not aloud to read or right but some still did in secrecy. She was probably one of the more lucky slaves, she was helped during her life and not tortured like she would have been if she were any other slave.
