The 1896 Revolution was a result of young Filipinos being able to study in Europe and become Enlightened by “the Propaganda Movement the injustices of the Spanish colonial government and the “frailocracy” (Philippine History, n.d.). This was the same reasons the American Revolution started, with the colonist they were not getting the representation that they deserved. The colonist did not have a say in any business, and laws pertaining to them. With the Philippine Revolution the Filipinos were also fighting for the same rights as the colonist in the American Revolution. A famous writer out of that era Jose Rizal who greatly inspired the movement for independence was key in creating the Katipunan (KKK). The KKK was a secret organization who wanted to overthrow the Spanish rule in the Philippines founded by Andres Bonifacio who became the overall leader. When the revolution began in 1896 Jose Rizal was executed in the spot now known as Rizal Park for treason. The KKK would find split within their ranks; the Magdiwang lead by Bonifacio and the Magdalo led by Emilio Aguinaldo. General Macarthur was ordered to retreat to Australia were he would plan to return to the Philippines. The Japanese forces overwhelmed the U.S. forces of about 11,000 men at Bataan. From this the known Bataan Death March started on April 9, 1942. There would be resistance with the Japanese occupation with guerilla resistance, with U.S. and Philippine army officers working together. The Japanese began to organize a new government in the Philippines at first it was a Council of State in were they had direct civil affairs. In 1943 the Japanese declared the Philippines an independent republic. Over time this proved to be unpopular with the Filipinos, due to the fact of mistreatment of the Filipinos and they understood that it was a puppet government ran by the Japanese.
