What work is
The frustration felt by the working class during the great depression is unmatched by any other economic struggle in history. Philip Levine puts the reader in his shoes, standing on the sidewalk in rain surrounded by despair praying for the impossible. In this poem Philip Levine gives social commentary on the Great Depression using themes of the time; class identity, personal loss, frustration, and waiting for something that is likely not going to happen. Philip Levine uses several poetic techniques to enhance the themes in this poem; imagery, symbolism, and rhyming.
