Philip II of Spain was also called the prudent. He ruled up until his death. He inherited the throne of Spain once his Father, Charles V, left the Holy Roman Empire throne. He received land in Spain, Netherlands, also some possessions in Italy and the new world. But he wasn’t very popular in those places because the only language he could speak was Castilian. When he came to power he worked very hard to overcome the flat in the system. Philip II was strict on the rules of catholicism and attempted to crush Calvinism, but that was not a good way to start off. Violence erupted in 1566 when Calvinists, especially nobles, began to destroy statues and stained glass windows in the Catholic Church. The novels were given very little, or no true power.

To make matters worse France and England gave total support to the Netherlands. Later on he realized he needed control of the Netherlands. He would need the Netherlands if ever he wanted to successfully invade England. However, his plans fell through. In 1588 he sent 130 ships to invade the coast of England and overbalance the government of Queen Elizabeth, known as the Spanish Armada. But, it was destroyed by England’s forces Although England and the Northern Netherlands remained unconquered and he went bankrupt in 1596, two years before his death, from excessive spending on war he was not a failure. Spain had the most populous empire in the world, controlling almost all of South Africa and many settlements in Asia and Africa. He defeated the Ottoman in the Mediterranean at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. He also achieved many things for the Catholic Church. The changes he tried to make in France caused Henry IV to become Catholic. He prevented the spread of heresy in Spain and Italy and stated Spain’s literary Golden age with his love of books and pictures. A great accomplishment was the building of the Escorialas
