Phil Vassar Concert Analysis

The concert I went to see was none other than Phil Vassar. He is a current modern country musician who got his start in the country music business in the 1990’s writing songs for various artists. Some artists he wrote for include Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina, Collin Raye, and Alan Jackson. Country music has changed greatly since its beginning. Fans who grew up with country music since its beginning also notice how the style has evolved over the years. Now country sounds more like a mixture of southern rock and pop. Most say that past country has great story type lyrics. The stories in the lyrics usually talk about heartbreak, romance, working life, and many other ideas. This modern country sound is more upbeat, and incorporates various elements …show more content…
This music sounded like Texas blues. It had the classic elements of blues to it with the style of lyrics having that blues tone. I asked some fans around me about their experience seeing Phil Vassar while we waited for the show to start. One fan said that they have seen Phil once before, and he was pretty good in concert. Another fan talked about her experience seeing Johnny Cash and June Carter when they came to the Ohio State Fair long ago. My mother attended the concert with me and she said that she has never seen Phil Vassar before in concert. Based on the responses, Phil performing seems to be new for most of the crowd but not all of the …show more content…
He began to play a song he had from his greatest hits album. Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with most of songs Phil has made. Most of the songs he played had a 2/4 time beat and he used the piano with every song he sang. It was unusual for me as a fan of country music to see an artist of the country genre using a piano as his main instrument. Most I’ve seen used vocals with a rock band setup (drums, electric bass, electric guitar) or the lead singer would play rhythm guitar with a rock band set up (same setup accept vocalist plays rhythm and another guitarist plays lead). There are various country artists of the past that used piano like Charlie Rich and Ronnie Milsap to name a few. Those artists were before my time though. Phil had a unique style using the piano as his main instrument. Elements of southern rock can be found inside each of the songs he played. He used the classic 2/4 time beat with guitar solos and twangy sounds you normally hear in country music. Phil did mention to the fans that he did have a fiddle player in his band before. He played one song he wrote for another artist named Jo Dee Messina called Bye Bye. He also played one of his hit songs called Just Another Day in Paradise. The crowd was very into the concert and dancing to the beat of each song. Phil even took song requests through tweets on Twitter. One song he played was called Six-Pack Summer. During some songs he allowed

Both of these concerts are undeniably different in atmosphere, sound, and eloquence; however, they do have one common factor. This common factor is the musicality they bring to their audience as well as the joy that is exuberated throughout the performance. The first virtual concert I watched entitled “Slatkin Conducts Appalachian Spring” was not a traditional band much like the other virtual concert entitled “Dr. Ralph Stanley and The Clinch Mountain Boys”. Appalachian Spring started out soft and sweet then it built momentum until the climax of the song. This point of the song was loud and demanding.…
