The Self-Driving Phenomenon
The phenomenon of self-driving cars is set to make impeccable changes to the day-to-day life of people both on a social and economic level. Self-driving cars have gained much popularity, due to strides by companies such as Google and Tesla. However, it has caused much debate in terms of legislation, safety, and jobs. It will continue to make major changes in safety standards and will affect millions of taxi drivers that use platforms such as Uber. The goal to create the first successful self-driving car has been pursued by several manufacturers. The most notable of these has been Waymo, formerly known as the Google self-driving car project. It is the …show more content…
These include a backup computer in case of the primary malfunctioning, backup braking, backup steering, backup power systems, backup collision detection and avoidance, and redundant inertia measurement systems for vehicle positioning to ensure accuracy in speed and position. Waymo’s technology is dependent on data recording and analyzing post-crash behavior. Considering the multiple sensors on the vehicle and computing system, the factors that go into a crash can be analyzed effectively and if needed updates can be sent out to all of the other existing cars to prevent a similar accident. The software within is encrypted and to meet standards set by the Automotive Cyber security Best Practices (Auto-ISAC). This is an industry operated association created to set standards to prevent cyber security measure and implement different procedures. With this said, Waymo constantly assesses the potential security threats that can occur from different areas of the self-driving car, performs multiple scenario testing, and implements the best solutions. The new software is then put through extensive testing once again to ensure safety. There are redundant safety mechanisms such as positioning and braking in place. In the situation that there is a breach of security and the software is decrypted, Waymo will initiate its incident response …show more content…
