Rationale for phenomenological qualitative study
Phenomenology method I have selected for this study because my intent was to develop meaning from a human experience (Patton, 1990). The lived experience is a self- understanding of a phenomenon through the subjective knowing of the researcher. A phenomenological qualitative design was used to understand the newly qualified nurses’ perceptions of working with mentally ill patients. As stressed by (Fossey, Harvey, Mc Dermott, & Davidson, 2002) qualitative research aim is to address questions concerned with developing an understanding of the meaning and experience dimensions of human’ lives and social world. Perceptions and attitudes are indeed dimensions of human lives and social experience, as is mental illness. A phenomenological approach will be used as it links closely the principles of qualitative methodology. “Phenomenology is to explore the meaning of individual lived experiences" (Rossman & Rallis, 2003).

Two factors were considered in deciding to undertake a qualitative study with this population. First, the newly qualified nurses have been educated beyond initial nursing education in the provision of care for patients across the scale during student time. The educator are responsible to develop an attitudes of each student, which influence the own perceptions of the phenomenon of working with people with mental illness. Second, develope an understanding of what newly qualified nurses experience when they are facing with mentally ill patients during giving care while working within their expertise or interest.
