Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were both phenomenal presidents in American history. “Teddy” Roosevelt was our 26th president and had many accomplishments within our country with the “Square Deal.” Roosevelt helped Americans with regulating railroad rates, and resolving the Anthracite Coal Strike in 1902. Woodrow Wilson was our 28th president who defeated TR in the election of 1812. Like TR, he also had many accomplishments with the “New Freedom” deal. Wilson lowered the protective tariff with the Underwood-Simmons tariff in 1903, he also revised banking and currency with the Federal Reserve Act in 1913. TR during his term had the “Square Deal” which was a combination of different successes. The Northern Securities Case which was regulating James J. Hill with the Great Northern railroad monopoly. TR resolved the Anthracite Coal Strike in 1902, and also revived interstate commerce with the Hepburn Act. Wilson had is domestic reforms with the “New Freedom” program. It involved lowering the protective tariff with the Underwood-Simmons tariff in 1913. He also revised America’s banking and currency with the Federal Reserve Act, which created 8 different Federal Reserves. Wilson regulated monopolies as well with the Clayton Anti-trust Act making interlocking directors illegal, and monopolies could not raise their taxes. Wilson dealt with foreign affairs more with WWI and defeating the Germans and Ottoman Empire. Wilson wanted many postwar actions to take place with the “Fourteen Points” and create a “league of Nations” (Brinkley, p.525). He helped end the Great War with the Treaty of Versailles (Brinkley, p.526). TR on the other hand resolved conflict in Venezuela, Panama Canal construction, and Peace of Portsmouth (Brinkley, p.510-511). TR received a Nobel Peace prize from his actions and made the U.S. internationally recognized, but Wilson resolved the Great War. Wilson and TR’s careers were both outstanding in their own unique ways. TR developed many national parks and created strength within our nation. He also had many accomplishments with foreign countries and always “Spoke softly and carried a big stick” (Dunne, p.355). Wilson on the other hand was strong with domestic policy and protecting the American people. He was hesitant with getting involved with the Great War, but entered in the war when it was necessary.
