The amount of interest I possess in sciences, especially Biology and Chemistry, has really driven me to seek out a career where I can actively apply these fields of study in a life-long career which I can enjoy and thrive in. I would like to combine my interest in biology and chemistry to develop and better understand biochemical relationships and then apply that knowledge in the field of pharmacy. Pharmacists play a vital role in society in promoting the safe and effective use of medications therefore promoting better health for the community. Pharmacists also play a vital role in ensuring that there are no complications or unforeseen drug conflicts. In this lab we took salicylic acid, then reacted it with acetic anhydride in the presence catalyst and heat forming crude acetylsalicylic acid or aspirin. My lab group and I, then proceeded to purify the product with ethanol, and verified its purity with its known melting point. At the end of this lab I was left with a sense of awe, in that I created something that once ingested interacts with the biomolecules of the body, creating an analgesic effect reducing pain and increasing a person’s quality of life. This reality had a profound impact on me, and this experience has stayed with me ever since which has resulted in multiple job shadows and eventually landing an uncertified pharmacy technician …show more content…
First and foremost South Dakota State University is located about an hour away from Hartford where my parents live. My parents and family play a big part of my life, and I am no more than about an hour away. Additionally, in my P3 and P4 years I can do internships in Sioux Falls or in surrounding areas. This is great because I can gain valuable experience while playing an active in the community. Another reason is that SDSU’s tuition to be much cheaper and affordable than other schools, and continuing education is also offered through SDSU which is both valuable and convenient. Finally, SDSU puts out a high quality education, according to the Pharmacy Highlights 2013 article published on your pharmacy homepage, SDSU students’ test consistently higher than the national average on the NAPLEX test, and 99.4% students pass on the first attempt. This shows that SDSU is strongly committed to its student’s success throughout their academic
