Pharmacist Personal Statement

My primary interest in a career in Pharmacy came from an overall interest in medicine and helping others. As a third grader, I had the first severe asthma attack that caused the first of several hospital stays. That incident sparked my curiosity about medicine. As an eight year old, I wondered just how a mist through a mask was able to give me a freedom to breath that my body refused to give me on its own. Throughout high school and college, I have consistently held jobs, participated in shadowing experiences of various health care professionals, as well as offer volunteer time. Each of those experiences were useful to me because they made me dig deeper into a career in health care and build the skills that I needed. When I began working as …show more content…
My first thought was to become a clinical pharmacist in a place like Veteran's Victory House, a nursing home where I sometimes volunteer and my mother is a CNA. I believe the best part about being a pharmacist is how easily accessible they are to patients whenever there is a question about their medications or for general reassurance. I had never realized just how many patients rely on pharmacists for their expertise on dosage, timing, and interactions of the medications. Each question a patient has at CVS gives me the opportunity to learn something new and interesting about medication. Completion of a Pharm.D. program will give me the ability to be that trusted health care provider that patients seek out. Working in the pharmacy has given me excellent communication skills, basic knowledge of commonly prescribed medications, time management skills, as well as helped me further develop my ability to work well with others. The more I work with pharmacists, the more clearly I see just how much I need to be in this …show more content…
One of the most interesting for me is the growing field of public health and how its inclusion of pharmacists has increased over the years. I would love the opportunity to reach out to small, underdeveloped communities like Smoaks, SC where I grew up. The idea to speak about prevention sprang from my personal struggles with asthma, high blood pressure, and being labeled as "pre-diabetic". Each of these were made worse by my battle with obesity. Over the last year, I have lost almost 70lbs by eating healthier and exercising, which has greatly alleviated my asthma symptoms and I am now at a normal blood pressure and blood sugar sensitivity. Educating others on ways to prevent diseases and conditions caused or worsened by obesity is an area that I would be devoted to to help others with and use my personal experience as a guide. Because drug abuse is also prevalent in my home town, I have also become interested in teaching about addiction medication. I believe that the ability to educate patients is one of a pharmacist's greatest

The occupation that I decided to use for the Domestic Associates Project is a Pharmacist. I chose this career option because I think it would be a good fit for me. The general task of a Pharmacist includes analyzing and assessing a patient's condition to choose the best prescription and treatment options for a patient. I think I would like this job because it requires close personal care for a patient, in depth logical thinking, and an understanding of the how chemicals react with each other and the human body. Fortunately all of these tasks fit what I am looking for in an occupation or are something I think I could do well.…

The Professional Development Programs helped me to think about the pharmacy career broadly. Before I wanted to work in a retail store but now I am thinking about either I will have my own pharmacy or I will be a clinical pharmacist. I realized that there is a lot of career opportunities in the pharmacy program that I knew before but did not think I will pursue them as I was very much into working in a retail pharmacy. PART B Based on what you learned from the experiences described above, create two goals—short-term and long-term—to address what you now need to learn and/or do to develop further. My two (2) SMART goals are: 1.…

As I sat anxiously in my desk the last day of high school, I felt compelled and overwhelmed to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Although after I shadowed one of my mother’s colleagues, I knew I could not handle the gory aspects that are associated with most healthcare professions; however, this shadowing experience led me to discover my initial desire to help others and make a difference. I owe my foremost interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy to my paternal grandparents.…

They are the last medical professional that the patient can talk too about their treatment, concerns and symptoms.…
