The Phantom Of The Opera – Evil, Are We Born With It?
The Phantom of the Opera is a well-known novel created by French writer Gaston Leroux in the 1910’s. This novel, a today Broadway award-winning play, relates the story of Erik nicknamed the Phantom of the Opera, a mysterious man who lives in a mysterious lair inside an opera house. Christine Daaé, an opera singer who lived and performed in the house, caught Erik’s attention which later was transformed into attraction and love. Erik fell in love with Christine, but she already had another interest. Raoul, Christine’s real interest, quickly turned into bad news for the Phantom. Erik desperate tried to get Christine’s attention and affection, but she was clearly attracted and falling in love

His mother did not like him either, so he never received loved not even by his parents. In the novel it is clearly stated the lack of affection and love toward Erik, when he said “my mother my poor mother unhappy mother would never let me kiss her she used to run away and threw me my mask!” pg. 193. At a young age, Erik ran away from his house and ended joining a group of gypsies, which made of him a living exhibition. During his gypsy life, Erik learned to be a great magician and demonstrated to be a skilled architect when requested to construct a palace for the Shah. Erik created a series of tunnels and traps throughout the palace causing the suspicious Shah to order his execution. Forced to leave again, Erik escaped making the underground of an opera house his home. As a skilled architect, he made tunnels and secret doors to keep him covered and mysterious gaining the name of “The Phantom of the Opera”.
In pg. 166 The Persian states “Erik had gone quite mad with love and he had decided to kill him and everybody and himself with everybody if she did not consent to become his wife”. He caught and kept prisoners Christine and Raoul forcing her to choose between them. He tried to manipulate Christine’s feelings with his music and his talking ability.
