Strength and Vulnerability in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Throughout his famous novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey shows that power and vulnerability are largely subjective, and people often only have power because others think that they do. Chief Bromden’s unreliable narration depicts all kinds of power as physical size despite a character’s real size or physical ability. Nurse Ratched’s power over the rest of the characters, and McMurphy’s ability to resist it, shows that power is a matter of people’s perception as much as anything else. Chief Bromden is the narrator and main character of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.…

However, many have speculated that Larson had written this book to reflect the similarities of Barak Obama and John McCain during their campaign in 2008. Not only were they both from different parties, but also they had different religious views. Yet Larson illustrates that every four years, we have an election to vote for the President and Vice President to change the political parties, yet function adequately. He also details the major rivalry between the two political figures both inside of office and outside and the past friendship they once shared. While reading this book, it was hard for me to understand the context of the election and why it was so important because of the amount of details Larson added.…

"Orwellian" is a term used to describe a situation, idea, or societal condition that George Orwell identified as being destructive to the welfare of a free and open society. Through the comparative study of George Orwell’s prose fiction Novel “1984” and Fritz Lang’s German expressionist film “Metropolis” it is demonstrated that the reign of Totalitarian governments and technology has the power to over-run and remove civil liberties. These two composers similarly share the ethics for which society has the freedoms of individuality and free will. In context, Lang reflects the anxieties of the Weimar Republic of Germany, under the stresses following the First World War, highlighting the consequences of rapid industrialisation and the subsequent…

In the section of the Phaedo we read, Socrates argues that one has knowledge of the form absolute equality prior to birth, and that learning is a “recovering of knowledge which is natural to us” (40). Socrates’ argument for theory of recollection and that one cannot acquire knowledge of absolute equality through empirical means does succeed despite some minor issues with it. Socrates first proves that there is no example of absolute equality in one’s own experience. To do this Socrates and his interlocutors first have to accept that absolute equality, the standard by which all other ‘equal’ objects can be measured, does exist and is known. The question then arises as to whether there is an example of this absolute equality in observation…
