Most people pause at some point in their lives to reflect on their own principles and on the practical implications of those principles, and they sometimes think about what principles people should have or which moral standards can best be justified. Hence, when a person accepts a moral principle, when that principle is part of his or her personal moral code, then naturally the person believes the principle is important and well justified. Therefore, it is viewed that morality does not just mean the principles of conduct that we embrace, but also the values, ideals, and aspirations that shape our lives. Was it “immoral”? Did it show a “lack of fitness” to teach? Explain how you understand the terms in quotation marks. The author believes that the behavior displayed by Mrs. Pettit’s was not unprofessional, immoral or showed a lack of fitness to teach. Firstly, ‘unprofessional conduct’ is any behaviors that threaten positive and productive relations with other people. Secondly, ‘immorality’ has to do with things that are wrong such as stealing, and lying to name a few. Lastly, ‘lack of fitness’ is the inability to perform any given task.
Was the Board of Education justified in firing Pettit? Explain. The Board of Education was not justified in firing Mrs. Pettit, due to the fact that the activity conducted was not listed as part of the Code of Conduct and Ethics handbook given out to teachers for them to use has a guideline while performing their daily task.
Was the court’s verdict consistent with its earlier handling of the case of the homosexual teacher?
