Petruchio Analysis

Decent Essays
Later on in the play Petruchio makes a bet with Hortensio and Lucentio. He says whoever’s wife comes to them when they are called upon will get 6,000 crowns. Hortensio and Lucentio’s wives don't come when they’re called upon. Katherine, however, is a different story. “What is your will, sir, that you send for me?”(Shakespeare.V.ii.109). Katherine surprises everyone when she actually comes ahead when she is called on. This showed that Katherine is fully tamed because she didn’t necessarily have to come because she wasn’t going to lose nor win anything at all if she came or not. The other wives didn’t come, so there wasn’t really an urge for her to go. Petruchio is truly in charge because he figured out just how to properly discipline Katherine.

“Unless you lean to show a friendly smile and speak a gentle word.” Stated by Hortensio to Katharina, in act one scene one. The men in the play showed that they thought and made it where the women should not speak their mind and if they did they would be called a shrew, and the men also appear to think the females should just sit pretty and not show their real emotions. I believe The Taming of the Sherw is a sexist play. The play is sexist due to the parts where they call women shrews, also the people try to change someone because in their mind are not in the right place and the fact that men and women are not equal in the play.…

Critique of Colacurcio Michael J. Colacurcio, an English professor at UCLA, wrote a book called: The Province of Piety: Moral History in Hawthorne’s Early Tales that analyzes Hawthorne’s work. In the book there is a section titled The End of Young Goodman Brown where Colacurcio theorizes why Young Goodman Brown finished his life depressed, suspicious, and without joy. He suggest it is because Brown “ends by doubting the existence of any unblighted goodness but his own.” (Colacurcio 302) And thus leaving him unable to enjoy his religion and faith has he once had. This is very true because religion was the main focal point in a Puritan village, and the Devil seen as the ultimate evil.…

Reigning over England in 1599 along with counsellors and ministers was Queen Elizabeth. Childless at the age of sixty-six, she governed the nation from London. In spite of the fact that her reign was clearly coming to an end she refused to choose a successor to take over her kingdom. Shakespeare was aware of who was part of his audience and knowing that Queen Elizabeth was very fond of theatre he attempted to entertain her but also, belonging to the English population himself, he too feared a civil war as a consequence to her apparent lack of concern about succession. Therefore he disguised his thoughts by using his plays in order to portray hypothetical consequences.…

Many people would question the women’s role in this story. Why didn’t they question the men more, or why didn’t they defend themselves better? In the Renaissance era women were raised differently than now a day. So, to put ourselves in their shoes for a moment we realize that these women that are in this story are very brave. Desdemona was courageous many times in this story, one of which is when she stood in front of the many powerful men to stand up and explain to the Duke that Othello did not “curse’ her, which also led to her explaining her father as why she “disobeyed” him.…

Gender roles have always been a prominent underlying issue throughout history within an androcentric society. The OED defines gender roles as the role or behaviour learned by a person as appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms (OED). Shakespeare explores the theme of gender roles throughout King Lear regarding women and power. He suggests that women are incapable of achieving power on their own and that when they receive power it will corrupt their judgement, cause nothing but chaos and bring about their downfall. Shakespeare challenges the traditional gender roles of women in society, giving them power whilst making failure imminent.…
