Gallipoli is a movie that was directed by Peter Weir and was released in 1981. It is set in 1915 and is based around two very different young men, Archy and Frank, who are brought together by competitive running to fight in the war together and become the best of friends. Despite their differences, running brings them together to be best mates. Frank and Archy show mateship through many ways. They are determined to be together and are willing to sacrifice their lives for one another.

Archy is told by his commander, Major Barton, that he will be the runner, but he refuses the offer in order to save his best mate, Frank from going to battle and most likely being killed. Frank is then made the runner. Archy sacrifices his life so Frank’s life won’t be in danger. By the end of the film, Frank takes huge risks to help save Archy and Archy comforts Frank because he is really scared. “Come on! No Turk’s going to waste a bullet on you!” Peter Weir shows that their friendship becomes stronger through shared experiences. They are both willing to sacrifice their lives for the other. At the end of the movie Major Barton leads Archy and rest of the Australian soldiers of the third wave as they go over the top of the trench and are all shot down by the Turk’s. Frank arrives only seconds after the men are sent over, and lets out a scream of despair. He was told for the third wave to be cancelled, for the 150 of the soldiers not to go over the trenches. He had lost his best friend. Frank was really determined to save his best mate and the rest of the front line soldiers. He ran across dangerous land where guns were being shot because he didn’t want them to die. He was absolutely guttered that Archy was
