When the word community is spoken, people usually think of helpfulness, coming together, and having each other's backs. A community is sort of like a big family in the sense that the members of it trust each other and help each other. Three books that support this sense of community are The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe, The Veldt by Ray Bradbury, and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Although the word ‘community’ is almost always seen as a positive idea, community can be a negative force when the people within the community have a need for revenge, are too trusting, and are forced into one way of thinking; when these components are enforced, a ‘community’ can become a negative and powerful force.…

One stormy, moonless night just past ten o’clock Jill came knocking on Tom’s apartment door. As Tom glanced into the peephole to see who was knocking on his door, he got an apprehensive feeling. When realizing it was Jill, his girlfriend, who he had just got into a heated argument with last night; he thought maybe I should not open it. It had completely stopped raining by morning and the sun was giving off a warm, hazy effect as I headed out for school. The ground was still pretty soggy even though the moisture was evaporating fast, and there were plenty of puddles along on the sides of the roadway that spewed out stretching across the street making the landscape look like it’d been dappled with small lakes. As I walked, I did my best to avoid getting wet from these puddles even trying to tiptoe my way through the ones I couldn't find a way around. Several strays had joined me in my journey once I’d made it to the vacant field not far from my house where they had liked to congregate. One of them happened to be Midnight.…

The poem I chose from the course packet "Poetry: Reading, Responding, Writing" was "Fifth Grade Autobiography", written by Rita Dove in 1989. The speaker in the poem is either a young boy or girl who is reflecting back on a specific memory of a family trip on a lake in Michigan when they were four years old. While first reading this poem, my first instinct was that it was going to be a narrative piece about the speakers literal time in the fifth grade, but upon further analysis, I found this poem to be much more nostalgic and reflective then my first instincts, and the title, lead me to believe. Throughout the poem, Dove uses many different poetic devices to deliver a vivid description of a trip the speaker took with their grandparents while…

The story of Cinderella was written by The Brothers Grimm in 1812. However, these two brothers did not actually write the original story of Cinderella, rather they wrote an adaptation of the German fairy tale. Their goal was to record all the popular fairy tales in order keep the old German tradition alive and make the people have pride in their country. They interviewed family members and various people in order to get the full stories. The stories were initially aimed at German families, particularly the children, which is why it is less violent than the original tales that woman would tell when they were in the kitchen.…

Waddy’s second classification of characters are the ones who tend to create homes for themselves, and, as they do, they become more fond of what they have created and more defined by it. Their home becomes their alter ego. She calls this category the Promethean pattern, for the characters have left one home and, usually through a good deal of work, created another. This pattern is obvious in literature of physical survival, but is present also in stories of psychic survival. Peter pan belongs to this category.…
