Rubens father was a legal adviser and lover to Anna of Saxony who was the wife of William I of Orange. William I was the main leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish. Peter Paul Rubens father was imprisoned for the affair in 1570 however, he was released and Peter Paul Rubens was born .
Following his father’s death in 1587 the family moved to Antwerp in the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium). As a child, Peter Paul Rubens received and education and artistic training. He worked as an apprentice to several established artists and was eventually himself admitted to Antwerp’s professional guild for painters in 1598 .

“He was appointed as the court painter to Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella who governed the Southern Netherlands” . Rubens was commissioned to produce two large religious works; “The Raising of the Cross” and “The Descent from the Cross” for the Antwerp cathedral between 1610 and 1614. During this period Rubens also painted historical and mythological scenes (1615-1621) .
Peter Paul Rubens wife Isabella died in 1626. Following her death he traveled for several years. He painted along the way, but also travelled for diplomatic and State affairs. He would visit Spain and England on behalf of the Netherlands. When he returned to Antwerp he married his second wife, Helena Fourment. In the 1630’s he produced many mythological and landscape pieces .
On May 30th 1640, Rubens passed away. He was 63 years old. He had eight children of his own. He was regarded as one of the most important and talented artist’s in Europe. He had produced well over 1400 works of art throughout his career
