Characters who aid and stand in the way of the hero play a large role in the feel from a movie. This film would not show a true hero’s journey without key archetypal characters such as a mentor, threshold guardian, allies, and many more. For example; without Wendy – Peters mentor, he may not have been motivated to go to Neverland and save his children. Without Captain Hook acting as a threshold guardian, Peter could have never remembered or completely forgotten his past life. Allies like the lost boys helped guide and train Peter to battle against the captain. Without them Peter would have easily lost the fight and never rescue Maggie and Jack. These are three examples out of many that show why these characters are necessary. This proves that archetypal characters are key components to a hero’s journey.
In conclusion, the film Hook does in fact follow a hero’s quest. Peter Banning or Peter Pan follows a typical journey of a hero described by Joseph Campbell. Peter still has his powers from the original movie, and all significant archetypal characters are present. Peter Pan has changed quite a bit from his original concept, but still has his imagination, courage, and most importantly his love.
