At the age of 11, Peter joined the college named Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario. Due to the transfer of his father in 1950 to its Ottawa headquarters, Jennings changed his college to Lisgar Collegiate Institute in Ottawa, Canada. Peter worked at CJOH-TV in Ottawa, Canada, anchored a local newscast, on Saturday, hosted a teen dance show, and Saturdays Date. In 1965, Jennings was hired to anchor its flagship evening news program by ABC News channel. In 1968, Peter worked as a foreign correspondent due to reporting from Middle-East. Due to the imperfection (inexperience) in anchoring, he was criticized by other news television. In 1978, he developed into one of World News Tonight's three anchors and got promotion in 1983 of the role of a Sole anchor (host). He was also well-known for staying on the air for more than 15 hours for straight covering breaking news such as the Gulf War in 1991, the Millennium celebrations in 2000, and the September 11, 2001 attacks. He anchored many shows of ABC news channel such as moderated several American presidential debates and ABC News special reports. Then he had become a naturalized American citizen in 2003.
