Peter Jahrling Peter Jahrling has an important responsibility at the Fort Detrick meeting. As a virologist, he is in charge of studying viruses and finding a way to treat them, but specifically tries to identify the virus that is executing the monkeys in Reston. Dan Dalgard, the veterinarian, has the duty of taking care of the monkeys. He notices something is wrong with the monkeys; their spleens were enlarged. After much examination and dissection, he sends the distended spleens to Peter. Peter receives the spleen in foil.
