Pete Seeger: Song Analysis

Improved Essays
The first song I picked is “We shall overcome” from Pete Seeger. The song is originally not from him, but was associated with the American folk singer after using it as a song of protest during the Civil Right Movement. The song became an anthem for the movement; because the melody is simple but contains lyrics that can speak to many, the song is a battle cry for any group that would face adversity. In fact, the song is still recorded today in support of diverse causes.

Sunday Bloody Sunday from U2 is also another powerful protest song. The song was released as a respond of the Irish band to the British Army’s armed attacked that took place in 1972 in Northern Ireland against the Northern Irish Civil Rights protesters. The attack is known

This song was a protest song in the civil rights movement era and became a famous anthem for the African-American civil rights movement. I choose the songs “Walkin’ After Midnight” by Patsy Cline (1957), “Darkest Valley” by Group 1 Crew (2012), and “Who I Am Hates Who I’ve Been” by Relient K (2004). I choose these three pieces because they are all something that I listen to regularly and they demonstrate a variety of styles in music. Patsy Cline was an iconic female country singer that won awards at the Deejay Convention, won Billboard’s “Most Promising Country & Western Female Artist,” and Music Vendor’s “Greatest Achievement in Records” all just for “Walking After Midnight” (Jones, 1994, p. 159). “Walkin’ After Midnight” music was written by Alan Block and the lyrics were written by Don Hecht ("Walkin' After Midnight." Second Hand Songs - A Cover Songs Database.).…

At this moment I can’t think on specific song that have been created to honor a specific person but I’m sure there is plenty of songs out there used to honor a specific event. I’m pretty sure there is a lot of songs made to honor what happened on 9/11. In today’s music singers focus more on expressing their feelings and get to their audience through the music rather than composing songs to honor a person or event. Artist are more concern in catching their audience attention by composing song that are catchy.…

*The Terrific Tweezer* Everyone expects tweezers to be an everyday device that is not that useful for anything other than your messy eyebrows. Although while they seem useless Katy Lindamood says that “tweezers can be used to remove debris such as glass, dirt, or splinters from a wound (overstock.com, 8/10/9).” Many doctors and nurses use tweezers in surgery, to simply remove something from a cut or to help stitch you up in an emergency situation. It was not even a week ago that I helped a sister of mine remove a splinter in her hand, she had got it while building her new table. While it is important to have tweezers in first aid kits, they are also a pretty rock’in song.…

Now when listening to this song, I found it to be on the opposite end of the spectrum from The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes.” Whereas the subject of The Who’s song seemed to be expressing remorse and sorrow, the subject in Johnny Cash’s song is bemoaning the fact that he is stuck in prison. He freely admits that he shot a man in Reno despite being told by his mother to stay away from guns. He expresses no remorse for his actions, rather he complains about the fact that he is stuck in prison while life outside prison continues without him.…
