Rose tried his best in every game and never took money to play bad: “The documents obtained by Outside the Lines, which reflect betting records from March through July 1986, show no evidence that Rose, who was a player-manager in 1986, bet against his team” (Weinbaum and Quinn). Since there is no proof he bet against his own team there should be no reason to ban Rose from baseball for life. According to Major League Baseball Rules only betting against your team would call for a lifetime ban; betting on baseball is only a one year suspension. An article by Rick Weinberg he says, “One of history's greatest and celebrated players, had gambled on baseball and bet on his own team” (Weinberg). The key word Weinberg uses is “on” because he did bet on his team to win but never to lose. Obviously, Rose was not intentionally losing games because there is no proof and he couldn’t be the best hitter in baseball and purposefully have lost games. As a result, Pete Rose never did break the second part of Major League rule 21 subsection D which states “Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently …show more content…
Rose never did anything to gain an advantage over his competition, and he definitely didn’t do anything illegal. Yet, people who are doing those things get off a lot easier than Rose did. Dayn Perry quoted Rose in an article he wrote for CBS he said, “‘I should have picked alcohol. I should have picked drugs or I should have picked up beating up my wife or girlfriend because if you do those three, you get a second chance. They haven’t given too many gamblers a second chances in the world of baseball,’ Rose said” (Perry). Sadly, what Rose says is true, if he would’ve done any of the things he said instead of gambling he could have prolonged his career and made it to the Hall of Fame. Home Run leader, Barry Bonds, took steroids to cheat and gain an advantage over his opponents, but he is still on the Hall of Fame ballot: “For Barry Bonds, this was his third year on the National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot” (Bloom). Many players in he MLB get suspensions and bans for a certain amount of time. These players could get banned for many of reasons like drugs, alcohol, mistreatment, etc. They get punished because they cheated to make themselves better or did something illegal. Rose didn’t do anything against the law and he didn’t cheat by making himself better. These people are committing worse acts and they don’t get banned from baseball or the Hall of Fame. Therefore, Pete Rose is not nearly as bad as many other players,
