Hunched shoulders, raised eyebrows, nail biting, and eye contact are all forms of nonverbal communication because they do not involve speaking. Nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful and widely used forms of communication among humans (Kaminsky). At times, we are not even consciously aware that we are using them but they allow us to reinforce the things we say and convey emotions without speaking (Cherry). They can also contradict the things we say, and affect the flow of communication. When a person understands nonverbal communication and learns to use it effectively, it can help them to navigate through many different situations in life (Kaminsky). Many emotions are expressed through the face such as disgust, fear, confusion, and sadness. In some Chinese cultures, even facial features can mean certain things. For example, they think that when a person has wide-set eyes, they are a broadminded person, and a high forehead means a person is smart. There are many things about the face that communicate our feelings. Pursed lips show distaste or disapproval (Cherry). When a person bites their lips it is most likely because they are worried or stressed (Cherry). Eyes can also give away our feelings.
