The leading cause of death is euthanasia in animal shelters("Shelter Dogs: Studies Highlight Why Some Are Adopted, Others Aren't.”) It isn’t fair, why would they want to kill animals for no reason? Other people wouldn’t like it they were killed for no reason. “According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), about 60% of dogs entering shelters are euthanized (ASPCA 2011).”("Shelter Dogs: Studies Highlight Why Some Are Adopted, Others Aren't.”) Wow, that is more than 50%! How could it have gotten this out of control? “Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats).”("Pet Statistics.") People really need to get a handle on this number because that’s way too big! Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.”("Pet Statistics.") This quote shows the quantity of animals in the shelter. Furthermore, these are the animals that get adopted, “Approximately 2.7 million shelter animals are adopted each year (1.4 million dogs and 1.3 million cats).” ("Pet Statistics.") This is a very good number of animals that get adopted. Lastly, “About 649,000 animals who enter shelters as strays are returned to their owners. Of those, 542,000 are dogs and only 100,000 are cats.”("Pet Statistics.") Some animals that enter the shelter are very scared, but when they are reunited with their owner it overwhelms them with joy.
