Pet Peeve Of Shops Blasting

One of the main concerns throughout the country is the amount of energy we use. According to Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York City, his pet peeve of shops blasting air conditioning with the door open is "wasting a lot of energy. [It causes] its own impact on global warming." Coming from a family that was crazy about saving money and energy, I can't help but agree with him. As a child, we rarely turned on the heater or the air conditioner. During the summer, we used fans and drank lots of ice water; when winter came, we wore sweaters and let some of the breeze in through the windows. There was rarely a time the thermostat was even used. I believe that the shops' decision to keep the doors open with the air conditioning flowing out is not just

Mark Bittman, author of the article “The Aliens Have Landed” published on the New York Times April 2, 2014 issue, argues that we need to take action to stop climate change. Bittman begins to support his argument by comparing our ignorant behavior towards climate change to the “retreating French” during World War II. He then informs the recent news from the Panel on Climate Change to emphasize the negative effects, and sarcastically compares them to aliens invading Earth. He next proposes a public works project and provides several examples of what can be done to start addressing climate change before it is too late. The author’s purpose is to…

The green house effect is a climate phenomenon caused by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide that trap heat in the atmosphere (Shaftel). While necessary to maintain life on earth, this fragile ecological process can be tipped too far in either direction. Sadly, this is exactly what has been happening. Global temperatures have increased to an unprecedented 1.1 degrees since industrialization (Hansen et. La.). This may not sound momentous so to put that into perspective.…

The so-called "air conditioning revolution," then, was actually an evolution -a long, slow, uneven process stretching over seven decades. Southerners decided that air conditioning was part of the American standard of living, something we're all entitled to. Even the language started to change regarding air conditioners, what had once simply been a "hot day,” the meteorological jargon “heat storm” had suddenly turned into a menacing aberration. Despite the best efforts of government, and industry, the air conditioner has not conquered all.…

Canada being one of the largest countries in the world is prone to extreme temperature changes over the course of the year throughout the various climate zones. With over fifty percent of the Canadian population having air conditioning in their homes, it leads to the argument of the sheer amount of energy required to run these systems costing hundreds of millions of dollars more than geographical areas with less temperature variance (Statcan.gc.ca, p.1). The energy consumption problem appears to be greatest in commercial buildings with conditioning air temperature being the simple largest energy drain. Deep water cooling appears to be a valid alternative to air conditioning or building chillers which use approximately 80 percent more energy…

Klinenberg defends his bold assertion by employing the logos appeal and the rhetorical device of antithesis. The sun shimmers across the balcony floor in a dancing wave of light, not a cloud in sight and only the slight breeze through the trees gives any character to todays summer weather. I remember being a child, when the weather was either radiating or the polar opposite; When it was too hot in the summer and unbearably cold in the winter, leaving the house was always a chore which either required you to be almost naked or hold five layers on your torso. That was before the anti-global warming act of 2032, an act which joined all nations and their people in an effort to save our planet. I’m happy to have been born within the Great nation, the effects of global warming were not as severe as they were in other countries, we got off easy. Further…
