Pet ownership can have many benefits for their wellbeing. There are many studies that have proven that pets can be beneficial. While there are studies that prove the usefulness of pets others have little benefit. The study () proves that a study can be conducted correctly but was not beneficial. The study followed the proper protocols, but the question it aims to answer offers little benefit to the public.
Overall there was little benefit of the study. The information gained in the study does little to help the public. Some of the studies mentioned in the beginning of the article offered some benefit. The study was designed to test how many children had pets in their household and it did just that. The selected method of obtaining data was through a survey. Based off of the information from the article the study met that two initial considerations “(1) what are the research objectives and research questions and (2) is a survey the most appropriate approach for meeting the research objective and answering the research questions”(). In this case a survey is the best way to obtain the needed data. The study design was created to follow children through the age of 10 to determine if they welcomed a pet into their household after the initial testing. This allowed for a more thorough analysis of the pet ownership among children. “Pet questions were asked during gestation, and at approximate child age 8 months, 21, 33, 47, 85, 97 and 122 months (up to 10 years old). For simplicity, these will be referred to as gestation, 8 months, 2 years, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 10 years”(). In order to determine the pet ownership in the house the mother was asked about any pets in the house. This was well thought out because according to the article only 2% of the population live in a single father household. So mothers of children makes up most of the …show more content…
While the study does a good job of including individuals from many different backgrounds, but it could have followed the children until and older age. The study stopped once the child turned 10 but these is a chance that a child got a pet after that time. Some families wait to allow pets into the house until the children are old enough to aid in the care of the child. The data of the amount of children that own pets could be skewed by ending the study too soon. The study is also a very long study for information that is overall unhelpful. Since the study stated that the surveys were done through surveys they could have surveyed mothers of children ages 0 to 10 all at once. Questions could include have you owned a pet since you have had a child. This would substantially lower the length and cost of the

In the article “The Last Meow” published in The New Yorker in 2003 the author Burkhard Bilger states, “Americans now spend $19 billion a year on veterinary care for their pets, up from $11 billion just seven years ago. Add to that the cost of pet food and other supplies, and the number rises to $47 billion, nearly three times as much as the federal government spends on welfare grants.” Bilger claims, “clearly our love affair with animals has gotten out of control ( Part 8 para 49)”. There is no doubt that Americans spend a ridiculous amount of money on their beloved pets; money that could be spent improving their quality of their own life and the life of others. By defining the ridiculous and costly love affair Americans have developed with…

I worked in the biology lab labeling pelts, bones, and animal specimens; by twenty-one, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and strived for my first job out of university. That summer, I joined Humane Society Naples and worked as a veterinary assistant, while also volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida in wildlife rehabilitation. This is my turning point and reminds me of Claudia at age seven, who wanted to save animals. The most vivid and unforgettable part of my time there was seeing the transformation of the animal’s health and behavior. From the time, they come into the shelter, scared and sometimes in pain, to then being apart of the team to medically assess and treat them, to witness their ability to play with other animals, and then to the joys of adopters coming in looking for their forever pet, is…

When visiting this company's website, the first thing I noticed was the wide use of images. Everything that I clicked on the page led to adorable images of various types of pets.…

John Ericson in his article, “Breakthroughs might mean the end of animal testing,” details some of the developing technologies that have the potential to greatly reduce the use of animal test subjects in research. These new innovations include computer modeling techniques and simulations, synthetic organs that derive metabolic profiles, and microchips acting as vital organs. Even with these advancements animals are the preferred subjects of testing, for example, the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) still requires animal testing in most drug review processes. Nonetheless, animal testing is still a risky method due to the biological differences between animals and humans. In the pharmaceutical field alone, these differences cause millions of…

This runs off of the theory that some people may believe that because they share the liking or disliking of someone that they are similar people with the same values and beliefs, this can be derived from the balance theory. When considered, this hypothesis is easily thought of to be accurate. With this hypothesis, there can be many other hidden factors that can play into these situations.…
