Pet Overpopulation Essay

Did you know that around 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year? The reason that this happens is because of pet overpopulation. There are so many animals that are taken into shelters that some shelters have no choice but to put some of the older animals down. This also includes farm animals as well. There are a lot of people out there who will say that the pet population is not going overboard. These people are the owners of pet stores and they are also breeders. Most people are just ignorant as to why Pet overpopulation happens. Pet overpopulation happens because pet owners do not get their pets fixed, some get their pets from breeders or pet shops, and some people treat their animals like they are disposable commodities. One of the first things that people should do when they get a pet, is to get them fixed. Around 86% of dog owners and 90% of cat owners got their pets fixed within 6 months to a year of first getting their pets (Pets). When it comes to pet overpopulation the 10% of cats and 14% of dogs is still a lot of animals that are not fixed. One pair of cats and their offspring can result in 420,000 cats in just 7 years (Pet). One pair of dogs and their offspring can result in 67,000 in 6 years (Pet). The reason why is because they are the ones taking the animals in. They are responsible for feeding and taking their animals to the vets. Animal control and shelters tried and will continue trying to do their best to keep the pet population down. The higher that the pet population gets, the more animals that have to be pet down in shelters. The more that pet owner do do things like getting their animals fixed, getting them from the shelters, and taking care of their animals the more animals will find their forever
