Mobile Phone Industry in United States: External Analysis The mobile phone industry in the United States is one of the thriving industries over the last two decades. Everyone owns a unit due to the conceived belief that mobile phone is necessity than a luxury. With the emergence of this communication tool, the communication mode of Americans had changed immensely. The invention of cellphones brought convenience to the many mobile phone users due to the wireless calls and text features. The latest incarnation of mobile phone is the “smartphones” where cellphones were integrated with Internet features and enhanced communication features. It can be considered that the crowning glory of the mobile phone industry is the existence of iPhones in the market. This is one of the products that were produced under this industry that specifically changed the game of mobile phone market for the better. In the late 90s and the early 2000s, consumers were contented with the call, text and camera features of the early cellphones that were popularized by Nokia. Models such as 5110, 3210 and 8210 are the early popular products of Nokia that gave birth to the new phase of cellular phones. From there, Nokia produced several models by experimenting the features in few models. The combined effort of Sony and Ericsson in producing a competition against Nokia paved assortment of models of cellular phones that were different from the usual design of Nokia. However, Nokia remained popular until the early 2000s that made Sony-Ericsson stopped the productions of their models and end their association. In the mid-2000s, Blackberry emerged and offered a more sophisticated versions of cellular phones, transitioning the industry into the phase of smartphone. Blackberry targeted the professionals for quite some time the brand became huge and popular that ended the popularity of early reigning brands in the market. When Apple announced that the will be launching their own version of smartphone, critics were skeptics, while rivals had strategically attempted to destroy the marketing approach of Apple, and this made the mobile phone …show more content…
The threat of new entrants is seen as low, this is due to the fact that the investment in the needed technology to enter the market is high while projecting a short span of time. This is the same with the threat of substitutes that was determined to be low because the features and functions built within the models of smartphones are vast and in wide range. The buyers ' bargaining power was determined to be medium as the availability of smartphones in the market is wide and diverse. This is due to the facts that consumers were being offered with dominating brand options and that purchasing them in given price is not an issue as long as they can acquire the latest models. The suppliers ' bargaining power was determined to be medium.
