Peshkin Ethnic Maintenance

Improved Essays
According to Peshkin, researchers should “systematically seek out their subjectivity”. Doing this will allow one to recognize up front how his or her subjectivity could impact data collection and data analysis. Following the subjective themes that were identified by Pershkin, I have identified areas that I should be aware of once beginning my study.
Ethnic-Maintenance I
Under the theme of ethnic maintenance, I should become aware of the things that I view people doing that I also may do myself or appreciate because it is something that I have done myself. For example, seeing a young black female in her mathematics class fight to establish her self-worth in class, whether through words or actions, my generate an emotional feeling of gratitude

While I may not be directly involved in the physical community of the participants under study, I may be aware of community that I appreciate that have developed in the classroom. For example, I may observe a community of students in the classroom that use “traditional methods”, such as pencil and paper, to solve mathematical problems. Since I truly believe that you must ‘do math in order to learn math’ I may view this community more favorably than one that prefers to use an online app to find solutions for problems. I must be careful to not judge the non-traditional community and give their methods the same attention that is given to the traditional community.
E-Pluribus-Unum I
E pluribus unum means “out of many, one”. I am really not 100% clear on Peshkin’s explanation of this quote, but I think it could be used to describe a classroom or school setting. Many different students make up a class, but the class could become be seen as ‘one’. From a researcher’s view, one needs to become aware of the way that they view the “mingling” of many. Do you as a researcher appreciate this mingling or do you see it as

In the psychology field, specifically race and racism it is an “opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of multiple oppression and the intricate lives of individuals predicated upon race.” A specific issue, which I would like to address would be ebony individuals living in a predominately white society. Furthermore, expressing the racial (intentional /unintentional) judgments made on African-Americans. No matter how hard you look or how far you go, you will never find two people that are exactly the same. Everyone in this world has a different story to tell. That is why everyone should be proud of their heritage and where they came from. The poem "Depression Days" by Pat Mora, and the short story "Names/Nombres" by Julia Alvarez both clearly stated this. They teach us to be proud of our heritage and who we are.…

I've chosen a topic that is not really talked about or taught fully in the school systems in society today. We have only learned a minimal of what they want us to know. We all have learned about Martin Luther King, Jackie Robinson, and Harriett Tubman in grade school. And we've learned that black people were slaves and sometimes heroes but they all had one thing in common they were suffering, but none were presented as conquerors scholars.…

Some of us have repeatedly taken for granted what our culture has to offer. Certain individuals spend too much time pretending to be something they are not and too often forget to embrace the fact they are special in their own way. Others constantly judge people because of where they come from. Many think they are better than others and discriminate upon them heavily. Society has played a huge impact on the acceptance of cultural diversity over time and influenced negative beliefs to many in order to portray the view of a perfect individual.…

As I have been reading and researching communities, most follow similar general patterns and outlines. The community members are working together for a common goal or they are brought together by corresponding qualities. When I think of the word community it is usually with a positive connotation rather than negative. In Amy Tan’s essay, she introduced a community that her mother was apart of that caused me to rethink my definition of community. Her mother was apart of a community of “broken” and/or “limited” English speakers by default because she could not speak our language properly according to our rules of grammer.…

Culture is a learned system of thought and behavior that classifies a certain group who shares particular beliefs, values, and practices. Arguably, it is one of the largest forms of identification when representing specific individuals; one can understand the nature of another via having a well-rounded understanding of culture. Birthroots play an immense role in shaping character; nevertheless, it is not the entire basis that embodies the wholeness of an individual. Mindy Cherri—a high school art teacher born into an line of Italian, German or west European, and American Indian descendants—exemplifies as a remarkable example of such disposition, for though her personal background and origin has influenced her via a number of measures, she has…

By speaking to another individual, I obtained a new level of understanding for her culture that differed from mine. My research subject was a Mexican-American born in California. She spoke of her struggle between dealing with two conflicting cultures. On one hand she wants to be part of her family’s heritage and Mexican culture but on the other hand, she is still a teenage American girl. Coming from a family who are primarily immigrants, there is great expectation for her to represent her culture, but being born in America already makes her seem less Mexican to the native-born.…

During his semester we’ve read books that talked about a multitude of problems including internal hatred, systematic racism, oppression, discrimination, problems with parents, and plethora of other subjects. While I related most to the author Coates, the themes Wilderson and Hartman are also very relatable. Attending a school with less than ten other colored students like myself had a huge impact on my self-esteem and the way I viewed myself growing up. Like Coates, fitting in was always a problem I had. I always felt like the odd one out, mostly because of the color of my skin but also because financially I couldn’t keep up with my “friends.”…

For a long time, I had trouble figuring out who I am as an individual. Under the conditions that I grew up in, it wasn’t always as simple as identifying myself by my race. Introduction There is a feeling of helplessness or insecurity that can arise in all humans regarding racial issues. This helplessness manifests itself in a variety of ways and dictates one’s actions. These actions can be strong and helpful while other actions are either harmful or can be perceived as insensitive. Throughout the class we read a variety of books in which I believed each touched on or had many moments where the characters had many manifestations of these feelings and consequently actions to deal with them. Our class interpreted these actions in different ways, showcasing the variety of ways in which people perceive situations.…

Culture is the essence of human interaction. It is how the world expresses the passions, inspirations, and purposes of differing lifestyles, when simple conversation won’t suffice. We exchange cultures for a mutual understanding of how those of the same race perceive the world in an estranged point of view; the extensive evolvement humans have made throughout different environments, behaviors, and beliefs. Although culture is what unifies the global society, it also divides. It shares the human affinities and juxtaposes dichotomies.…

When planning a research proposal, it is important for a researcher to choose an appropriate research method to investigate the questions they wish to answer. The method the researcher choses is dependent on the type of research they are undertaking and usually falls under either qualitative or quantitative research, although in complex cases, a more mixed method may be required (Liamputtong, 2010, p. 9). This essay will define qualitative and quantitative research; discuss the epistemologies and methodologies and strengths and weaknesses of these research approaches in addition to comparing how they are used within the psychological research field. Qualitative research is primarily used when researching the social factors of life that cannot…
