As many of the supporters of gun control state how the second amendment states that guns are only for militias may be what it states. Many court cases, such as McDonald v. The city of Chicago in 2010, have similar rulings all stating that the second amendment is an individual right. The constitution reads "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." this alone is enough to support the right for citizens to bear arms as well as militias. With tighter gun control laws less law-abiding american citizens would have guns and more criminals would have guns. A Nov. 26, 2013 study found that, between 1980 and 2009, "assault weapons bans did not significantly affect murder rates at the state level" and "states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murders." Many of these horrible shooting we hear of today could be stopped by a "good guy" with a gun. It comes down to a simple question; would you rather have a gun to protect yourself or would you rather be helpless to a criminal with a gun? There is a lot of evidence to support the claim that gun ownership deters crime. One of those being how once Chicago allowed conceal carry permits the crime rate went to a 56 year low.
