History
Peru was the nucleus of the highly developed Inca Empire which extended from the Ecuador to Chile. This wealthy civilization attracted the Spanish Conqueror Francisco Pizarro, who invaded Peru in 1532 . Peru became the main source of Spanish wealth and power in South America. In 1821, Peru declared its independence from Spain.
The Maoist guerilla group Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) began their brutal campaign to overthrow the government in 1980. A smaller rebel group, Tupac Amaru, also fight against the government. About 69,000 people were killed during the 1980-2000 wars between rebel groups and the government.

And it is not uncommon to experience all four seasons in a single day. In a country as geographically diverse as Peru, local weather patterns vary greatly. These different environments make Peru a privileged place for ecotourism and adventure sports like mountain, climbing, rafting, cycling, etc.
In the highlands, temperatures during the day can get hot. At night, temperatures can drop quickly and a warm sweater makes walking around the plazas comfortable. The Amazon experiences...you guessed it, rain heat and more rain and heat! The average daytime temperature is 30-32° C (85-90° F), while nights can cool down to 20° C (68° F). They do have a wet and wetter season with the wet (dry) season corresponding with the dry season in the highlands. The desert coast is arid. From January to March the sky is clear and the air tends to be hot and sticky. Peruvians go to the beach at this time.
