Having the opportunity to travel to South America and experience a landscape and culture as rich and dramatic as Peru would be an experience of a life time. I may not be fluent in Spanish or an expert on Marine Biology, but I know that with the right attitude, anyone can contribute to an abroad. As an entrepreneur with a small business that I am currently growing, I am always looking for new perspectives and experiences to help shape my career and ideas. Additionally, the business experience I have can be applied anywhere – business takes place around the world and everyone takes part in it in some way. I’m hoping to provide a unique perspective to both our abroad group and all of the new faces we meet.

Yet as a group of friends traveling in a new country, it will be vital for us to work well together. I see group learning as any experience in life where a team of people are working together toward achieving a goal by utilizing new experiences and knowledge. I feel that I work well with a team but am always looking for ways to improve too. Typically, I will take on the role of the leader providing guidance and planning while ensuring everyone feels they are in the best position to utilize their specific skills. There should always be a balance between planning ahead while keeping the group focused – this is best achieved through effective communication, making sure all ideas are heard, and creating a loving atmosphere. As a junior at Northville High School, I am already discovering my passion for business through my participation and leadership roles in organizations such as DECA. I have obtained not only extensive marketing and general business knowledge through self-studying for competitive tests, but also practical communication, presentation, and sales skills while representing various business professionals in judged roleplay scenarios. I have placed at the district, state, and international level in my events, and this year I will have competed at the International Career Development Conference for my third year. These experiences give me a good foundation of understanding business concepts, and I plan to learn more about how businesses operate in the global market through the Business is Global program at the Kelley School of Business.…

Every single person in the world will end up having to deal with problems and challenges in their life, whether it be mental, physical, as a group, or as an individual. People genuinely have two options when it comes to dealing with problems. They can stand up and do everything they can to figure them out, or they can sit back and let the problem takeover. One of the hardest problems to face is in a group setting because in order to fix the problem it requires someone to step up and be a true leader. Once the problem is solved, however the feeling of accomplishment is astonishing.…

More so, students are more motivated to learn in groups rather than by themselves (Frykedal & Chiriac, 2014). This leads into self-efficacy concepts, as while self-efficacy is defined by the concept of student confidence vs. ability, self-efficacy is typically fueled by the students examining if the content is even possible and reacting accordingly (Schunk, 2012). Working together allows for students to deal with unexpected problems that may spring up, either a lack of understanding or confusion regarding techniques, or even potential bugs in the game with groups as work can be delegated and tested by team mates. It also helps sharpen goal-oriented mindsets by placing emphasis over achieving results with the techniques over individual need to…

My experience has been interesting, positive, and at the same time rewarding. My very first experience with working in group was couple of years ago during a final year project, in my country of birth. The project was in community medicine, and involved repeated trip to a rural community by my group to access their health status, and needs. We had many challenges, but overcame them all as a group. I learnt the act of collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making by consensus building, and most importantly; comradeship.…

I am choosing this because Are you sure you want to go there for humanitarian sake? This will not be like a regular vacation or a regular spring break. While there are a ton of new things to see, try, taste and do, mission trips are not for the faint of heart. Especially not to Nicaragua. Nicaragua is a poor country, and although it's been doing decently well despite Ortega being its president, there are still people who are poor in rural and secluded areas.…

The transfer of learning is apparent in my practice, no longer do I just let groups form, and rather I strategically think about the desired outcome and select the best mix of personality types to approach the particular challenge. Understanding that the same group dynamics that work well in one set of circumstances may not service the organization well in all circumstances. If a situation is urgent and requires a rapid decision a group heavy on clarifiers might not be the best approach. Generally speaking again knowing the context of the challenge or opportunity may drive a different approach, if given the choice you want as diverse a group as possible to create as many different solutions as possible. I would say group process and projects I have been…

Every person has different strategies when it comes to learning and working either alone or collaboratively within a group. I consider myself a doer. I take pride in diving straight into the workload and scratching something off of my to-do list. In March this year, I brought up the idea about going to Costa Rica for our annual summer trip. My family and I had traveled to Europe in the past and experienced the famous tourist sites and cultures. In all of these tourist places, English was widely spoken and it was easy to get around, order food and find our way round. Costa Rica: safe, peaceful, adventurous, and a tourist haven. I envisioned Hawaii with even bigger mountains, more lush forests, coffee and chocolate everywhere, and lots of adventure activities.…

The day I got the acceptance email to join Global Glimpse, a non-organization seeking opened minded students willing to travel into a Central America, I became filled with astonishment. Little did I know that this trip was going to define one of my important feature: adaptability. When the day finally came, my family helped me pack my bags and we headed off to the airport to meet my delegation. Approaching the group I was mesmerized of the amount diversity we had in the group; we had people from Palo Alto, Oakland, San Jose, Davis, individuals had traveled all over the world and those with a strong athletics background. Then there was me a 5’ 8” asian kid who had never traveled beyond California.…

We gazed up at the rugged and rough shape of the Andes as it looked more immense as we drove closer. As soon as we climbed Mérida , we were welcomed by the exquisite view of the bone-white ground with a ghost-grey mist.
