Vaccinations Encounter Defamation Most parents of children will face the choice of whether to vaccinate their child or not. When making a decision, undecided parents will likely ask doctors, their parents and the internet for answers. Naturally, parents will want to protect their children from diseases and viruses such as the flu, Hepatitis B, measles, mumps etc. However, with media fueling heated debates and celebrities speaking out against vaccinations, this seemingly simple decision has become one which ruminates in the minds of a myriad of parents. Hesitant parents will have questions about vaccinations and it’s safety after hearing stories of vaccines linked with a plethora of side effects and other dubious information. For example, the pertussis vaccine is known to cause side effects of crying, a fever and seizures, and the rotavirus is associated with intussusception ("The Benefits of Vaccination Outweigh the Risks"). While it is true that the pertussis vaccine can cause the side effects described above, in a study in Japan there were only 400 cases of pertussis and 10 cases of death when vaccinated. While when there was no vaccination there there about 13,000 cases and 113 deaths. That’s over 3x the amount of cases and 11x the death toll ("The Benefits of Vaccination Outweigh the Risks"). The rotavirus vaccine although associated with intussusception, a painful condition in which the intestine folds into another intestine, has no impact on the chance of a person contracting intussusception. Whether a person is vaccinated or not, they have the same chance of getting intussusception ("The Benefits of Vaccination Outweigh the Risks"). Another, concern that parents might have is the fact that some vaccines have thimerosal (a derivative of mercury). While some vaccines do have thimerosal, it is also true that it is contains the smallest amount (less than a trace) of it and is put in to prevent bacteria from entering the vaccine vial. From the moment the baby is born, it’s body is fighting off viruses, bacteria and fungi. The decision to not vaccinate offers little benefit if any at all, instead it endangers our children, increases the likelihood of infection, leads to outbreaks of preventable diseases and breaks down herd immunity for those who need it. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that we protect our children and vaccinate
