The Writing Process

DESCRIPTION: We are currently working on opinion essays in our writing unit. Students have been drafting book reviews over the past few weeks, focusing on finding evidence and using persuasive language. Today, I introduced the students to the second-to -last step in the writing process: Editing. We started on the rug, as I introduced the editing checklist. The checklist had four main points – it had students check for capitalization, punctuation, spelling and understanding. I used an exemplar of a book review, and modeled how an editor would read the piece once and then go down the checklist with a careful eye and mark up the paper. I started with capitalization, before moving down to punctuation, spelling and understanding. After I …show more content…
I wanted students to work together in a positive environment because a lot of times writing is an independent process. By having students work in groups it gave them a chance to do a couple of things. One, build a positive peer relationship class. I chose to partner up students who did not usually work together because I know that when students get free choice they tend to want to work with friends, and not get much work done. Second, writing is mostly an independent process. We do a shared writing piece for each unit, but it usually falls to the background after the first two writing sessions. By having the students work on their writing together as editing partners, it gives them a chance to share their work and get peer feedback. This leads me to my third point: Peer Feedback. As we teach writing, a lot of the times students do not get much feedback from their peers during the writing process even if they do get a chance to confer with my cooperating teacher or me. We also do not tend to let students give each other positive feedback, until they are done with their writing. This is a great model and has helped students build up a positive vocabulary, but the process of sitting down next to a friend and helping them navigate through their writing is a skill students need to

When reading The Everyday Writer, written by Andrea A. Lunsford, director of the program in writing and rhetoric at Stanford University, I realized the importance of revising and reviewing of writing. Learning the process of writing will help greatly; therefore, assignments in the future will be more advanced and proper. In fact, peer editing is a fantastic strategy for the perfect paper; sometimes when one edits their own work they might overlook a few things, having someone else edit the paper gives another perspective to the writing. Being open to another opinion and attaining other opinions can open the mind to improve the writing. Seaman High School, where I attend, offers the Writing Center, ran by students and staff is to help improve…

I chose Chapter 23 “Using Source Material” in Writing: 10 Core Concepts. “Using Source Material” is important and useful information on how to use other sources in your writing effectively. Chapter 23 gives examples for how to: include enough information to back up your ideas, but not so much information that it covers up what you want to say. In addition, it gives tips for how to incorporate it into your writing. Robert P. Yagelski argues that “The challenge for many students is resisting the tendency to rely too heavily on source material so that it doesn’t take over the student’s own writing” (743).…

According to Boyles (2004), “teachers talk with students to monitor their progress as well as to set goals and help them solve problems” (p.75). Teachers should conduct writing conferences in order to assess and evaluate the writing progress of their students. The purpose of writing conferences is finding the strengths and weaknesses of their writing to improve and develop the skills the student already has. Depending on the students writing the teacher facilitates interventions to improve the students writing skills. Teachers should frequently plan writing conferences to check-in on their students and the progress they have made.…

Collaboration in certain classes, like English, is useful because it helps students understand the symbolic meaning behind statements and understand the readings better. From my experience in high school, when the students in my class collaborated more with themselves than with the teacher, they would share their own opinions, persuade their classmates to change their opinions, and would also get off topic often when the teach wasn’t watching. The curriculum must be changed to improve the educational system. Teachers should have a strict curriculum that they follow. This will ensure the students receive the most important information possible, allowing the students to develop their own opinions and beliefs.…

What is more important is that students practice writing. Teachers also need to devote time to feedback through individual sessions or “conferences”. Collaboration can affect writing in many ways. In this piece of writing, working collaboratively really helped us reach a stronger base to start our paper. We each wrote our statements for each section, and then took out the strongest points in each of our drafts for our final paper. It all flowed really well together. We had some questions we were not sure about throughout our paper, so we visited the Center for Writers multiple times to get some feedback, and make our paper meet its criteria.…

The Power of Collaboration “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is process, but working together is success” (Henry Ford, Brainy Quotes). Throughout the first couple weeks of college, I expected to figure out everything out on my own without help from anyone else. However as it may be the case in some circumstances, I can surely tell you that classes like English 100Y definitely does not hinder the concept of teamwork or collaboration. Throughout the semester we have been exposed to a variety of group based activities and challenges. These collaborative assignments help benefit the students with the capability to attack challenges in the future whether it be in another class or life itself.…

Some of the keys to successful processing are allowing sufficient time for it to take place, emphasizing positive feedback, maintaining student involvement in processing etc. To be cooperative, group members must promote each other’s learning and success face-to-face, hold each other personally and individually accountable to do a fair share of the work, use the interpersonal and small group skills needed for cooperative efforts to be successful, and process as a group how effectively members are working together. These five essential components must be present for small group learning to be truly cooperative. There needs to be an accepted common goal on which the group will be rewarded for their efforts (Johnson & Johnson,…
