Zach Bryers was born in The Australian Capital Territory in 1979 and has lead the Australian effort to help guide young Australians with any troubling experiences. Zach Bryers had a harsh upbringing and was always angry at his mother because his father wasn’t there to be angry at. At fifteen years of age he left home and went to stay with his friends when he could, but often slept in the sand dunes on the beach. Zach picked himself up after four years on the streets and with the help of his girlfriend decided to join the Australian army.
Zach Bryers served in the armed forces for years until he was medically discharged due to post-traumatic stress disorder. He finished his training to become Canberra’s first full time youth worker, helping support young Australians with any hardships they were dealing with. Zach’s own personal experiences have helped him to understand what these children go through and supplying them with tools to deal with their issues. Zach is now also the first recipient of the Churchill Fellowship award which helps young Australians travel overseas to participate in important activities of their choice. he chose to travel to America and Rio de Janeiro to see the ‘cure violence’ program in action. Zach Bryers has dedicated his time to helping others throughout his life which makes him an excellent recipient for the Australian of the year
