The Ducks Need Our Help

Purpose: I hope to acquire donations and financial support for the K-State Ducks Unlimited
Chapter.
Audience: The donors and supporters at the Kansas State University Ducks Unlimited
Annual Banquet.

Introduction

Attention Material: According to an article titled Wetlands published by the Natural Resource Conservation Service under the US Department of Agriculture, only 46 percent of all original wetlands in the United States remain. This means that the ducks and geese we all love only have half the habitat they once knew.

Credibility Statement: In the rapidly growing world we live in, waterfowl need our help now more than ever. Like most of you, I enjoy hunting waterfowl and I love a good duck roast but if we do not help the ducks, we will not have anything left to hunt. As President of the Kansas State University Ducks Unlimited Chapter, I understand that the science is simple; waterfowl need water and if we keep draining wetlands for farming and infrastructure ducks and geese will not survive.

Audience Involvement: We are hunters, but more importantly, we are conservationists and stewards of the land, and today we need to show where our hearts lie.

Second Main Point: As a university Ducks Unlimited Chapter, we attempt to reach out to the youth and young adult generation who may be less informed and less interested about waterfowl. We use funding to host events such as the Rubber Duck Race where we educate the public, specifically children about waterfowl, and the Wildcats for Wetlands Initiative, which works to educate college students about the importance, and far reaching positive impacts of wetlands. We understand that many who are passionate about waterfowl conservation are older and we are attempting to spark a fire in the younger generation in order to keep our efforts alive long after everyone in this room is gone. Donations to our Ducks Unlimited University chapter can allow this to

I attended the SNID Talk given by Rosemary-Claire Collard on Thursday, March 30th 2017. The main concept of the talk was how capitalism has led to the unraveling of animal life- specifically Alaskan sea otters. Collard has studied the sea otters’ life course in Alaska since colonization. She studies topics such as the near extinction of sea otters during the fur trade and the Exxon Valdez oil spill that resulted in the death of thousands of sea otters.…

The ASPCA: A Guilt Trip Most organizations and companies successfully advertise their ideas in commercials by appealing to the audience most likely to indulge in them. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) crafts its commercial to target animal lovers. In order to convince this target audience to donate to the ASPCA’s cause, their commercial unfairly plays with viewers’ emotions by using heroic word choice, displays depictions of animals, and utilizes a celebrity endorsement; however, its use of uncertified facts undermines the organization’s credibility.…

When assigned to read a source and write a follow up paper, often times a student will only do the bare minimum that is required of them and just skim the text. However, this is a practice that is ultimately harmful for the learner, as when one does not dig beneath the surface level of a piece of work, they can not accurately analyze or garner the author’s true purpose and intent for writing. Instead, author Mike Bunn challenges college students to “read like a writer” (Bunn 2011), and focus more on how effective the work is and whether or not the author achieved their purpose. By following this practice, a student is able to produce greater works of their own, as they will learn from the style and structure of others. Therefore, when dealing…

Many people think deer hunting should be illegal, but they don’t think about all the car wrecks that happen due to the deer, how much crops they eat from farm land, also how much landscaping they destroy from bucks making rubs and scrapes, they destroy a lot of fences, and how people use…

I most relate to the transcendental literature because of what it inspires within me. It is all too easy to get wrapped up in what society expects of you. The transcendentalists writers like Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman suggest we listen to our inner voice. The duck hunting community as a whole helps the national as well as local wildlife agencies. They do this by purchasing their Federal Duck Stamp as well as their individual state required hunting licenses. These stamps aren’t cheaper either, especially since all the prices got raised this year. The hunters never complain, it’s something that you can’t put a price to high on, no matter…

Concepts of social justice are more frequently applied to natural systems in political ecology (Robbins 2012). Perspectives on wetlands in particular have been instrumental in shaping Tule Lake and Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuge and debates over wetland policy illustrate the difficulties when attempting to quantify or monetize ecosystems (Robertson and Wainwright 2013). The political debate about how we value systems that provide ecosystem services to humans and animals, but provide some other quality to life that is particularly difficult to quantify, a and are rooted in…
