Thesis: Student Loan Debt is harming student’s financial stability and undermining their long-term life goals.
Introduction:
In fall 2014, I transferred to Harold Washington College after being out of school for two years. That same year student loan debt within the United States surpassed $1.1 trillion (Frizell) and some of that debt is my own. The U.S economy depends and thrives on consumer purchases.
1. Borrowers are waiting longer, or completely declining, to participate in life and economic decisions such as marriage, having children, purchasing homes, or starting small businesses.
1. After the recession it has become a lot harder to qualify for a mortgage if you have student debt.

B. Current students and graduates with debt are looking for ways to spend less and save more.
1. In his article, Frizell interviews a 23 year-old Dentistry student who says he avoids going to any event that would cost him any money.
1. He also mentions going farther in between haircuts, does not own a television, or pay for Internet service, relying on the free Wi-Fi.
Due the dramatic increase in student debt educational institutions, amongst others, are trying to find way to both lower and eliminate student debt.
II. In Debt and Graduation in American Universities, authors Rachel Dwyer, Laura McCloud, and Randy Hodson note that two/thirds of college graduates acquire student debt; citing the need for educational institutions and the federal government to become involved in helping lower student
